A recent study has concluded that if women give birth at home with the help of a midwife, the home birth can be as safe as a hospital birth. The study was done by comparing the approximately 2,900 home births with the approximate 4,700 hospital births both of which were done with the presence of midwives.

Those results were then compared with with the approximately 5,300 hospital births which were attended by physicians.  The study which was conducted by the University of British Columbia.

The conclusion of the study is that if women gave birth at home, they had less complications than if they gave birth in hospitals.

It should be noted that not all obstetricians share this view. Some obstetricians in New Zeland and Australia are in total opposition to home births and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is unambiguous. Both groups of obstetritians are adamant that complications can arise even if the pregnancy is considered low risk so they are totally against home births.

The exact opposite position is taken by United Kingdom‘s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists who toally support home births but the support is for women with low risk pregnancies.
